Making a Web-Series

Progress (or lack thereof)

Two weekends ago I took a nice little trip to Indiana for the production of our web-series. We had found out that our lead actor had dropped out on the Thursday, so we were in scramble mode. After trying to call in all the favors we could, we realized we still had no lead male, but we had a full crew and locations reserved.

After talking for hours with the co-producer (Charles) we decided to try and cut our losses, just get something in the can. While I drove down he wrote two new scripts for short films that we could get shot using what locations and actors we had.

We decided to shoot a nice little spy film, working with all of our resources, and our crew’s willingness to shoot night exteriors in the snow. We got it all planned, scripted, set-up our locations, lit the exterior of a house, the interior of a few rooms, the interior of a car, and got it kicked out in two 7 hour chunks.

Currently Charles is editing it and I am giving him notes until we get picture lock when I will throw a lovely color grade on it.

Creating content from great distances

Charles lives in Indiana and I live in Michigan. As we work towards creating good stories, planning all things pre-production, and figuring out how we are going to pull things off, we must find new ways to collaborate. We now meet via the internet.

Some of the tools we are using: Celtx, Dropbox, Tumblr, gchat, and gmail, we are soon going to be testing the new googlewave.

There are always challenges in creating any type of video. We are up for them and will continue working on getting our show up.

Side note:

We have three episodes written, Charles is working on #4 and I am working on the title sequence. Once episode #4 is finished we will start the fantastic casting and crewing process. If you want to be involved let us know!

Hey guys I’m working on the third episode right now… We are pretty pumped… in the next few days I’m going to begin releasing excerpts from the script line by line…

The third episode for some reason has proven to be the hardest to write thus far. Interestingly enough it’s the first story that’s based in something that actually happened so the story isn’t the hard part just getting it down seems to be taking me longer than I wanted…

I’ve moved back to Indianapolis for the time being but I’ll probably be heading to Grand Rapids to have a meeting with Eric this weekend so look for a video coming too…

If you haven’t figured out I’m addicted to ellipses I don’t know why but they are definitely my favorite punctuation mark (take that periods)… I know it’s quite dorky that I have a favorite punctuation mark but we’ll let that slide for now… Great idea for a blog post on my other blog (arrgg I need to write my script!!!)…

Oh Right! I was going to tease you guys with a little bit of the story for the third episode. I’ll just say this and be on my way… Have you ever won a gold fish at a carnival?
